We at Powered by Orange got to sit in this morning at the PBO launch press conference and hear College of Science Dean Sherm Bloomer and Corvallis Mayor Charlie Tomlinson talk about Oregon State’s impact and advances over the past year…despite the state’s weathering the economic recession. It was fun – and encouraging – to hear just how deep our impacts go, and just how wide of a reach we have in keeping people and the planet healthy.
In 2008-09 Oregon State amassed more than a quarter-billion dollars in scientific contracts and grants. That money’s funding hundreds of projects, among them wave energy, creating healthy and sustainable food systems, making advances in preventive medicine, nuclear engineering and drug development.
Our researchers are entrepreneurial, as well. In 2009, our Office of Tech Transfer helped create four new start-ups, with products ranging from a highly efficient field tool for assessing nitrogen, chlorphyll and water testing of leafy plants to high-value natural supplements with potential in preventing cancer. It generated more than $2.7 million to the university, more than ever, and nearly triple of what we earned 10 years ago.
And in marine sciences, we’re getting stronger all the time, which is making people recognize us as one of the nation’s leading programs.
