How important is having clean water? And how easy is it to take for granted?
On Wed., December 2nd, students will be raising awareness of the nearly 900 million people worldwide who lack access to clean water with a ‘dirty water vending machine’ located on the OSU Memorial Union quad. The vending machine, loaded with dirty water, will be operating from 11:00 am until 3:00 pm. Donations will be collected to support UNICEF’s efforts to bring clean and accessible water to millions of children around the world. Waterborne illness is the second largest killer of children under five, with more than 4,200 children dying every day of water-related diseases. The ‘dirty water vending machine’ is a project by students in the University Honors College colloquium entitled Water: Policy, Technology and Culture in Latin America. The bottle vending machine is generously being donated by Pepsi-Cola of Corvallis for the afternoon.
