University district planning envisions the future

Development of a road map that will guide Oregon State University’s campus evolution for the next decade is under-way with university, community and city of Corvallis stakeholders. Known as the University District Plan, this document will span the campus planning horizon from 2016 to 2025.

The creation of a University District Plan will serve as an updated revision of what was formerly known as the OSU Campus Master Plan, says David Dodson, the university’s land use planning manager.

Development of the plan will be guided by matters such as community collaboration initiatives, enrollment planning, on-campus residential housing plans, transportation management, natural resources, space planning for teaching and research and maintaining and improving existing facilities.

Oregon State Vice President of Finance and Administration Glenn Ford appointed a community and technical advisory committee made up of 20 community and Oregon State representatives to contribute to the preparation of the University District Plan, along with a steering committee to guide and review the progress of the larger public engagement process.

Community members have a number of opportunities throughout the process to learn about the university’s plans and share their ideas. Two open houses last month presented the first chance for public input, and Oregon State planners will host two sessions in December to update the public on what they heard at the October meetings.

Several more public meetings will take place throughout 2015, along with joint work sessions with the Corvallis Planning Commission and City Council. Dodson says he is hopeful final adoption of the plan will occur by the end of 2015.

“We welcome the community’s engagement with this process,” he says.
