We hosted a Vietnamese “boat person” to enable him to attend our high school for his final year, while improving his English and adjustment to this country. Hoa succeeded in escaping his first try, but the voyage to the Phillipines was a challenge; at one point they used parts of the boat for fuel to cook. He perfected his ping pong skill in the refugee camp and consistently beat “our” Japanese boy spending his junior year in our high school. He went on to Calvin College for his engineering degree and is now employed in California.
